Mount Vernon Man Beaten To Death After Alleged Attempted Break-In A Westchester resident was beaten to death with a metal pipe after allegedly attempting to break into a home.  Harold Bates, 29, of Mount Vernon, was killed around 11:53 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, after being hit with a metal pipe, said the New York City Police. Police found Bates after responding to a call of a burglary in progress on East 223 Street in the 47 Precinct, said the NYPD. Gregory Fernandez, 32, of Yonkers, attempted suicide on Aug. 28 and died on Sept. 1, from his injuries, said Justin Pruyne, a spokesman for the Department of Correction.
