MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Cleanup efforts continue at Memorial Field in Mount Vernon, as city officials attempt to once again make it a viable recreation hub in Westchester County.

Members of the Mount Vernon Department of Public Works have been busy recently, cutting tracks at Memorial Field and preparing the field to lay down a semi-permanent track that can be used for walking, light jogging and exercise, according to Mayor Richard Thomas.

Thomas noted that the city has also retained an engineering firm that will pull samples from the debris that was dumped on the field earlier this year, which has been sent to the Department of Environmental Conservation for testing.

“While we continue to hold community forums and evaluate the long-term commercial and recreational prospects of the Field, we know the people of Mount Vernon have waited long enough for their Field to be returned to them. The track and cleared Field means the location can be used for summer events, festivals, and year-round  just walking around the track with friends.”

Last year, Thomas’ office released his “ Mount Vernon Playbook ,” which outlined his plans for the once vibrant and lively recreation hub, and has since been meeting with the community as they discuss the best steps to take as they move forward with revitalization efforts.

According to Thomas, his vision includes a new stadium that seats between 15,000 and 25,000 people with shops, restaurants, a pool, movie theaters and other commercial space at the park, which will feature an eight-lane track and super-sized grass field under a retractable dome.

Thomas said that this would create hundreds of permanent jobs, thousands of indirect jobs and increase sales tax revenue. “This is the type of shot in the arm our local economy needs to reduce the property tax burden, while enhancing quality of life.”
