To become one of the 1,000 Gates Millennium Scholars for the GMS Class of 2013, Alvarez had to maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. More than 54,000 students applied for the competitive scholarship
By becoming a Millennium Scholar, Alvarez will have her undergraduate education completely paid for. If she pursues a career in the fields of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science, she can become eligible for further funding to continue her education through her master’s and doctoral levels.
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program is funded by a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The program promotes academic excellence and encourages students to continue their education past high school.
Recipients of the scholarship are afforded networking and mentorship opportunities, personal and professional development and the financial means to prepare for education at the next level.
