According to Jeff Gorman, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, power was cut off in the school about 8:30 a.m., though students and staff were able to continue their days with minimal inconvenience.
The three-alarm fire tore through Artuso’s Pastry Shop on South 12th Avenue on Monday morning, prompting crews from the Mount Vernon Fire Department and Fire Department of New York to respond. All of the employees of the bakery were unharmed, though two firefighters were treated for minor injuries.
“School officials visited and returned from the school, and all of the students and staff are safe,” Gorman said in a statement. “Teaching and learning took place, and since the power was out, lunches were made at the high school and shipped to (Grimes Elementary.)”
