MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The Enclave on 5th, a mixed-use educational and housing development in Mount Vernon, broke ground on South 5th Avenue in the city on Tuesday.

The 80,000-square-foot building has been vacant for years. It will be completely renovated, featuring 40 affordable housing units for seniors older than 55 years old. The ground and sub-level floors will be converted into the Westchester Community College Mount Vernon Extension Campus.

In a statement, Darryl Towns, the commissioner and CEO of the New York State Homes and Community Renewal, said this is part of a statewide effort to increase low-income housing options.

“Gov. (Andrew)  Cuomo prioritized expanded affordable housing for New Yorkers in need. The state’s investment in this senior housing project will provide high quality stable housing,” he said. “I congratulate our partners for bringing the different funding resources together to make this project a success.”

Funding for the Enclave on 5th was provided by public and private benefactors. Towns’ organization provided $5.22 million in bond financing and nearly $400,000 in Low Income Tax Credits.

Westchester Community College will move from its current location on Gramatan Avenue to the 5,000-square-foot location on the ground floor of the Enclave. The new campus will include ten renovated classrooms, a lecture hall and academic support center.

“We are very excited about this project,” Michael Goldberg, the CEO of Enclave Equities, said. “We believe that the state of the art building will have a long lasting impact on Mount Vernon’s centrally located 5th Avenue corridor.”

Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis said this is just one of several Mount Vernon projects that residents can look forward to in the coming months and years.

“We’re excited that Westchester Community College has chosen to invest in Mount Vernon,” he said. “They bring a partnership of private and public resources that will improve the area and meet the needs of the community.”
