Shortly after noon on Wednesday, there was an altercation outside of the entrance to the Mount Vernon High School that resulted in a former student suffering a stab wound in his back. The victim was treated by the school nurse on scene before being transported to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
As a precaution, the school district was placed into its lockdown protocol and a security officer was assigned to each bus - which is standard procedure - during dismissal. The Mount Vernon Police Department also increased patrols on campus following the incident.
According to the Mount Vernon Police Department, they apprehended a suspect who was placed in custody at approximately 3:30 p.m., though the investigation is ongoing, and the motive for the attack is unclear.
