A man walked into Webster Bank on Popham Road in Scarsdale at approximately 11 a.m. on July 18, 2015. He was seen on surveillance video wearing sunglasses and a yellow hat, slipping a teller a note that read “GIVE ME ALL YOUR (…).” The man then took off on foot, taking off with an undisclosed amount of money.
The bank robbery launched an extensive investigation involving Scarsdale detectives, members of the FBI’s Bank Robbery Task Force, the Westchester County Police and the District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Division.
Scarsdale Police Capt. Thomas Altizio said that the department’s preliminary investigation included multiple interviews with all bank personnel, customers, witnesses in the area and a review of the video surveillance camera.
Investigators never relented, and detectives eventually identified a suspect, Bronxville resident Matthew Affek. Altizio said that Affek’s DNA was a positive match to evidence he left behind at the bank.
On Thursday, Jan. 24, shortly before 6:30 p.m., Affek was arrested and taken into police custody in Mount Vernon. He later admitted to the bank robbery at Scarsdale Police Headquarters.
Affek, 36, was arrested and charged with felony larceny. No return court date has been announced.
