Burke replaces Carl Bell, who was fired by Mayor Ernie Davis last week.

“I believe Richard Burke is the right person for this job," Davis said in a news release. "He comes to us with the skills, experience and familiarity of what is needed to help us aggressively work at combating crime. He will lead the department until a new commissioner is appointed.”

Burke, who had served in the MVPD for 21 years and retired in 1994, said in a news release that he knows the people of Mount Vernon and it is looking forward to serving again.

Burke will be sworn in on Friday.
