Treasured Mount Vernon Pizza Maker Joseph Piscopo Dies At 77

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- A beloved local pizza icon and backbone of the Mount Vernon business community died suddenly last week. 

Joseph Piscopo, of Mount Vernon, owner of Johnny's Pizzeria, was 77 when he died Aug. 15.

Piscopo's legacy is not only his family, but the pizza business his father started 74 years ago.

Piscopo was born March 15, 1939 in Mount Vernon, the son of the late Joseph and Concetta (Angelori) Piscopo. 

He attended Edison High School and always worked at his family's Mount Vernon pizza business.

He and wife, Maria (Colabella) were married 46 years and she became an integral part of Johnny's. They had three children and family was the most important part of his life.

Piscopo also loved the New York Yankees, New York Giants, and golf.

He is survived by his children, Joseph and his wife Preziosa of Brewster; Ricky, of Mount Vernon, Concetta of Mount Vernon; and Tina and her husband Michael of Yonkers. 

He also is survived by his grandchildren Brianna Marie and Joey Piscopo; Christian Pineiro and Ava Marie Vetere; and a brother, Frank, of Florida. 

He was predeceased by his brothers, John, Anthony, Anthony (Sonny); and sisters, Anna Adamo and Marie Gesuele. Survivors include many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

The family requests donations to St. Jude's Children’s Hospital or the National Kidney Foundation.
