A parking garage outside Bed, Bath and Beyond and Target on East Sandford Boulevard was shuttered by police on Tuesday after it was determined it was unsafe because of a break in a column in the structure. The revelation led to the evacuation of multiple stores in the vicinity, which were forced to shut down for the day.
It was not immediately clear when the damage occurred or what caused it. Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas could not be immediately reached for comment on Wednesday morning.
There is no timetable for when the garage will reopen to the public.
