Mount Vernon...Did You Know?

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Did you know that John Stevens, a merchant tailor from New York City, founded the Industrial Home Association No. 1 of New York in 1850, which later became the Village of Mount Vernon?

Originally, Stevens founded the village to help improve condition for the working class. At the time, the land was part of the Town of Eastchester.

Stevens Avenue, which runs by City Hall between Gramatan and W. Lincoln avenues, is named after him. Additionally Stevens' house, located at 29 W. 4th St., is part of the National Register of Historic Places.
