On Wednesday, Thomas announced the “Snapchat Geo-tag Challenge: Put Mount Vernon on the Millennial Map” for graphic illustrators, artists and designers, with the goal of selecting a “geo-tag” from a pool of local artists that will be officially submitted to Snapchat.
Those interested in submitting a "geo-tag” must follow specific Snapchat guidelines. Submissions can be sent by email to mclark@cmvny.com with the subject “Mount Vernon Geo-tag” no later than 11 p.m. on Thursday, April 7.
Submissions will then be reviewed by a panel of local stakeholders, with finalists being presented to the City Council that week. Any submissions will become property of Mount Vernon, including trademarks and other rights. A winner will be announced a week later on Thursday, April 14.
This is just the latest attempt for Thomas to connect with his constituents through social media, having used various platforms during his campaign to unseat Ernie Davis as mayor and in the first few months of his time in office. In a statement, he said that he hoped to make this a community-wide effort, from school children to professional artists.
“Snapchat is an innovative and cool way to stay involved with what’s going on around you. Our community has incredibly talented individuals who can create a unique geo-tag to capture the spirit and rich culture of Mount Vernon,” he stated. “This is another way to #ConnectMV and empower the residents to shape our digital identity as a sports, entertainment, heavy manufacturing, construction, jobs and beautiful homes destination.
“We hope all the art classes and clubs in our school district and faith-based community participate, so they know that their voice and vision matter. The geo-tag challenge is for everyone in Mount Vernon, especially the next generation, who own the future.”
