MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Work continues at the controversial Memorial Field in Mount Vernon as the city attempts to beautify the once vibrant community space.

Last week, crews from the Mount Vernon Department of Public Works began beautification efforts at Memorial Field to “help restore public access for recreational activities as soon as possible,” Mayor Richard Thomas stated.

Crews have begun leveling the grass area, removing weeds along the Sandford Boulevard corridor and planting grass seed, “exemplifying the new growth of our city,” he added.

Thomas also noted that the DPW is getting ready to lay down a new track, “giving use of the field back to the residents of Mount Vernon.”

“DPW mechanics have begun an initiative to ensure maximum safety on all of the city’s sanitation vehicles by installing rear back-up alarms, complying with all safety regulations and guidelines issued by OSHA, New York State, and federal laws. The safety of our employees and the public is the number one priority in conducting all the services that the department provides.”

Once completed, Thomas said that in the coming months, the DPW will begin various scheduled cleanup weekends, and volunteers are welcome. Anyone in helping to clean up Mount Vernon can contact Thomas by email or online.
