Mount Vernon To Celebrate Jamaican Independence

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Get ready to party and celebrate Saturday and Sunday in Mount Vernon as the 50th Anniversary of Jamaica takes center stage.

Carnival Fest starts the celebration at noon Saturday. The festival, which runs until 7 p.m., will take place at Hartley Park near the roundabout at the intersection of Gramatan and Lincoln avenues. The festival features live performances, an outdoor marketplace, face painting, food and a costume contest.

The celebration continues at 4 p.m. Sunday at Oneness Rehoboth Church, 125 E. Third St. The service will be held by Senior Pastor Arthur Thomas and Minister Paul Bailey.

The celebration concludes in Roosevelt Square in front of City Hall. Known as "Jump Up," live music and vendors will be present at 6 p.m. to entertain and sell merchandise and food.

The event will also feature a live telecast with other countries.
