MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- A Holocaust Remembrance Observance will take place Monday, May 9 at 7 p.m. in the Mount Vernon City Council Chambers.

The free event is sponsored by the City of Mount Vernon in partnership with Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS), the Jewish Council of Mount Vernon and the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. A dozen area Holocaust survivors will be in attendance including one woman who worked as a teen in at least four different concentration camps including Auschwitz, before being liberated from Bergen-Belsen.

Another attendee, one of three girls born in Poland, had been moved with her family to the ghetto and on the day of the last "Aktion," her Christian nanny went to the gate and got word to the family that she would take one child. The family took her and passed her through the gate to the nanny who then raised her as her “out-of-wedlock child. To this day, the woman, who is married to another survivor (he'll be there too), has never seen her family members, but still corresponds with the family that saved her.

Rabbi Morris Barzilai of Sinai Free Synagogue in Thornwood and Mayor Richard Thomas are among those that will be in attendance.

City Hall is at One Roosevelt Square North.

Questions? Reach out to the Sinai Free Synagogue at (914) 664-1727.
