Dog Dies In Westchester Apartment Fire: Incident Now Under Investigation Thanks to quick effort from firefighters, an apartment blaze in Westchester that caused the death of a small dog was kept from spreading to other floors or units in the building, officials said. The fire began at an apartment in Mount Vernon at 243 West 1st St. around 9 a.m., prompting Mount Vernon Fire Department crews to race to the building to contain the blaze.  According to Mount Vernon Director of Communications Timothy Allen, crews quickly entered the apartment where the fire started and searched it for occupants, initially finding no one inside.
