Sherman Park Erupts in District 20 Softball Win

THORNWOOD, N.Y. -- White Plains had just evened the score with Sherman Park in the bottom of the fourth inning, but it would not stay that way for long. Sherman Park erupted for a double-digit scoring inning in the fifth, propelling the host to a 22-11 win in a District 20 Little League Softball Majors’ Championship first-round at Volunteer Field Sunday.

Sherman Park will play Harrison in a winner's bracket semifinal on Tuesday at 5:45 pm. at McDowell Field in Ardsley. The winner advances to the final at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Sherman Park. White Plains will face Hastings in a loser's bracket game on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. at Valhalla.

“When the girls came in we wanted them to have an inning that they were capable of and they responded,” Sherman Park manager Mike Mangione said.

Sherman Park sent 14 hitters to the plate in the fifth and scored 10 runs. Lisa Cristiano had a two-run single in the inning and winning pitcher Ali Brunetto, Julia Mancuso and Daniella Mulvey each registered RBI singles.

Mancuso finished 5 for 5 and scored three runs, Angela Mangione added three hits and also scored three runs and Caleigh Carr collected two hits. Antonia Perino and Brunetto each had three runs scored.

Lauren Medico had three hits and three runs scored and third baseman Joelle Orzo made a great defensive play to end the fifth inning.
