Westlake High hosted 382 first-year science research students on June 6.
Students came from 24 schools in the Hudson Valley region, and more than 250 judges volunteered their time to analyze each student’s research projects.
There were multiple winners from many schools in each category and subcategory, Lawrence McIntyre, fair director, said in a press release.
McIntyre has seen participation nearly double from just over 200 in 2012, the first year of Westlake’s event, to 382 this year.
“It’s great to see so many students interested!” McIntyre said. "More schools are starting science research programs and the enrollment in existing programs is increasing rapidly, including at Westlake.”
The science research program at Westlake is also in its third year. Several students recently won prizes at other fairs.
Sarah Marino won second place at the International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering & Environment) Project Olympiad held in Houston, Texas, in May. She also won second place at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair. Marino plans to attend Cornell University in the fall, to continue her studies of bees and environmental management.
Westlake junior Steven Brunetto and senior Adam Catto also won medals at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair.
