Matt Waldron, 84, a lifelong Rockland County resident, succumbed to burn injuries on Sunday morning, said Stony Point Police Lt. Daniel Hylas.

Waldron and his wife, Eleanor Waldron, were burned around 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in a detached garage on their property on Charles Court in Stony Point, police said.

The man was working on machinery when she became aware that he was on fire and she was burned after attempting to douse the flames with water.

"Propane does not appear to be the accelerant but a small propane heater in the garage may have been the ignition point for some undetermined flammable liquid or product," Hylas said. "All indications lead to a tragic accident."

The investigation into the cause is continuing.

Waldron had roots that go back hundreds of years in Stony Point and the community mourns his loss, he added.

Eleanor Waldron is being treated for burns and is expected to survive, police said.
