Alksnis was born May 19, 1908, in Riga, Latvia. She was married to Haralds Alksnis. She trained as a nurse in Latvia. She worked at hospitals in Riga, in displaced persons camps in post-war Germany, and in Valhalla. She fled Latvia with her children during the war. They left DP camps in Germany for Brooklyn in 1951. When she retired in 1974, she was a head nurse at Grasslands Hospital. She was a resident of Westchester for 55 years.
Alksnis is survived by her children, Aija Grinbergs of White Plains, Mara Boedefeld of Chicago, and John Alksnis (Laurel) of Guilford; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19 at the Latvian Church in Yonkers.
