Monday's Memorial Day Parade and ceremony along Commerce St. was a somber occasion, but one the American Legion Post 1547 and comrades reminded Thornwood residents is critical to the future.
John Nonna, parade marshall and member of the Gilbert Rauch Post 1547, led the procession down Commerce St. at 11:00 a.m. to the Thornwood Memorial Monument, where he began the morning ceremony.
"Someone once said sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance. Your commitment is much appreciated so that ceremonies like this remain meaningful, and that we pass the deep significance of Memorial Day onto our children and grandchildren," he said.
Examples of that included the Hawthorne Boy Scouts leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Nina Veljovic of Westlake High School singing the "National Anthem" and Kevin John of Westlake High School performing "Taps".
"It's a wonderful turnout; exceptional this year. And it's wonderful to see the children," Joan Maybury, Town Supervisor, said.
Not only are these events important for children, but guest speaker, Ret. US Military Chaplain and current survivor outreach coordinator for Army Community Services, Major Sandy McLean, believes it is crucial for those who have lost a loved one in battle.
"As hard as it is to lose someone to natural causes, I suggest it is much more difficult to lose someone who died in the line of duty. Every year, survivors are reminded that a part of them is missing," he said. "They are, in fact, survivors... They also served while their spouses were away serving in a foreign land.
McLean urged anyone who knows a survivor to let them know you appreciate them, adding that events like these, in addition to family and friends, are what allows them to move forward.
After the ceremony, Participants marched to the American Legion Post at 52 Garrigan Ave. for refreshments.
