Stone Barns Celebrates Harvest Season

POCANTICO HILLS, N.Y. – As families with babies in strollers walked by a pen full of turkeys, toddlers started pointing to the strange birds that were wandering around.

Parents pointed out the turkeys and asked their children 'What does a turkey say?''Gobble, gobble!' the kids replied.

A few hundred people took the short drive up Route 448 to the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture on Saturday for the 2011 Harvest Fest.

The eighth annual festival included live music from Dan Zanes & Friends and Spuyten Duyvil.

Children raced with eggs and threw bean bags into baskets during the farm Olympics. Later they would hop on a trailer full of hay to take a ride around the Stone Barns farm and visit the farm's animals.

Parents wandered around the farmers market, sampling local foods and vendors such as Irvington's Red Barn Bakery, the Captain Lawrence Brewing Company and the Stone Barns Center.

Stone Barns staff competed in a tug-of-war, with cooks battling farmers in the annual contest. The farmers tried to develop a winning strategy, but the cooks won with sheer brute force and determination.
