MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. For Westlake High School Principal Keith Schenker, making sure that each student is on track with their studies is a key priority. Therefore, Schenker instilled a new program which he calls "ACE," or Acedemic Centers for Enrichment."It gives kids an opportunity to seek extra help at all levels during their lunch period," Schenker said.The Academic Center for Enrichment, located in the library, will feature a teacher from each of the core subjects for students to seek. After eating their lunch, students can use the remainder of the period to receive help on a subject matter that may concern them.In previous years, the teachers that are in the ACE would be used for duty such as hallway patrol or a study hall. Schenker said that the faculty has been great in accommodating students, as they may be asked to help a student that is not their own."The teachers have been extremely helpful in volunteering for the center," Schenker said.Mount Pleasant Central School District Superintendent Dr. Susan Guiney said the ACE allows teachers and students to further communicate together."The students feel very comfortable with the teachers and going to them so I think this is a great opportunity for them to build upon that relationship," Guiney said.Both Guiney and Schenker said that this program is especially useful for those students that participate in after school activities, but also for students that continue to challenge themselves with a difficult schedule.The ACE is open during all three lunch periods in Westlake. Schenker said that this year could be considered a pilot year and that he would eventually like to open the center in first and ninth period as well.
