MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. Mark Rubeo was given many positive role models growing up in Mount Pleasant.
As I grew up here, there were a lot of people that looked out for me like my parents, teachers, and parents of my friends, Rubeo said. Those people set the bar for me and made me want to get involved when I was older, I wanted to do more,
Those role models were the ultimate reason why Rubeo decided to serve on the Mount Pleasant Town Board two years ago. This month, Rubeo is up for reelection and will be running against fellow incumbent Carl Fulgenzi and challenger Jane Abbate. Rubeo and Fulgenzi will be running on the Republican and Conservative lines while Abbate will be running in the Mount Pleasant Now party. Residents will have the chance to choose two out of the three candidates.
As his first term concludes, Rubeo said he is proud of the boards accomplishment. Given the circumstance of things like poor weather and state mandates, I think we on the board accomplished a lot for the people here in Mount Pleasant, Rubeo said.
Rubeo said that over the past five fiscal years, the board has maintained to keep their tax increase under two percent and recently saved the people of Mount Pleasant approximately $325,000 by eliminating positions within the town.
People here in Mount Pleasant know that Westchester has the highest taxes in the country and its our obligation on the board to keep taxes at a minimum growth, Rubeo said.
The most notable accomplishment for Rubeo is the revitalization of the Hawthorne Train Station, he said. Rubeo said he and other board members were able to seek out parties that would be interested in revitalizing the station through what he calls a private-public partnership. That agreement allows the revitalization to occur without it being a cost to residents.
Rubeo said he hopes the new station will ultimately lead to business growth in the surrounding areas. I think people and business owners in that area were looking for someone to make the first move with improvement and we should see a ripple effect occur as a result, Rubeo said.
Rubeo, 40, is a resident of Hawthorne and is married with two children. He is a graduate of Westlake High School and has a bachelors degree from St. Lawrence University and a juris doctorate degree from Albany Law School. He has practiced law for 15 years and has a private practice in Hawthorne. Along with the town board, Rubeo is heavily involved with organizations such as Mount Pleasant AYSO, the Mount Pleasant Education Foundation, Mount Pleasant Rotary Club, and E-Books for Troops.
