MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. - Joan Maybury coasted to re-election as Mount Pleasant Town Supervisor Tuesday. With 88 percent of districts reporting, Maybury received 74 percent of the vote and challenger Richard Gagliardi took 26 percent, according to unofficial results from the Westchester County Board of Elections.
"I had great confidence in the voters, that they would make the correct decision," Maybury told the crowd of Mount Pleasant Republicans gathered at the Casa Rina restaurant in Thornwood. "You just never know what could happen. It would be foolhardy to go into an election thinking you are going to win. You can't be certain."
Tuesdays election marked the first contested race for town supervisor in years. Maybury ran on the Conservative and Republican party lines and Gagliardi, an Independent, ran on the We the People line.
Maybury is completing her first term as town supervisor after being sworn in to replace former supervisor Rob Meehan in January 2010. Meehan served as the Mount Pleasant Town Supervisor since 1990, before being named county attorney.
Maybury said a priority for her is keeping taxes at a minimum growth rate for the residents of Mount Pleasant. By eliminating 15 positions from within the town during her term, Maybury said she believes she has done an adequate job of meeting that goal.
Previously, Maybury served on the Mount Pleasant Town Board since 1992. She is a former teacher at Columbus Elementary School, where she worked for 13 years. Maybury has a bachelors degree from the College of Mount St. Vincent and a masters degree in special education from Manhattan College. She is a 25-year resident of Hawthorne and is married with three children.
Gagliardi supports a more transparent government in the Town of Mount Pleasant and believes residents should have more access. Gagliardi said he wants to increase the towns police force and improve the departments equipment through federal grants.
Gagliardi is a 40-year resident of Hawthorne and is married with two children and four grandchildren. He is a former police officer in Virginia and is currently the honorary police commissioner in Mt. Vernon. Gagliardi has a Ph.D. in Physiology and operates a Physiology practice in Greenwich, Conn.
