MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. A contested election is no issue for Mount Pleasant Town Supervisor Joan Maybury.
You dont expect to go in to every election uncontested, Maybury said. Every year you expect someone to run against you so its no surprise when it happens,
This November will be the first contested election for town supervisor in recent memory. In January of 2010, Maybury was sworn in as supervisor after current county attorney Robert Meehan served since 1990. This year Maybury, running as both a Republican and Conservative, is being challenged by Richard Gagliardi Sr., who is running on the We The People line.
Maybury previously served on the Mount Pleasant Town Board since 1992. In her first term as supervisor, Maybury feels she fulfilled the position well after being asked to fill large shoes.
I was initially concerned because I was looked upon to meet high expectations left by Rob, Maybury said. Considering the challenges this town has faced with issues such as weather and natural disasters and the continued demand for lowering taxes, I think Ive done the job well,
In order to keep taxes in the town at a reasonable rate, Maybury and the town board eliminated 15 positions of town employees during her first term. This move forced the town to do more with less, which she says was a success. Maybury said that managing the towns finances in a sound manner going forward will allow for taxes to stay at a low rate for residents under the two percent tax cap.
Before taking the politics route, Maybury held a position as a teacher in Columbus Elementary School for 13 years. Maybury is married with three daughters and has lived in Hawthorne for 25 years. The long lasting relationship she holds with the town of Mount Pleasant keeps her concerned with the general public.
I care deeply about the people in this town not just because I am representing them but theyre also my neighbors and my friends, Maybury said.
