Fernando Izazaga of New Rochelle was struck by another 27-year-old, Johnny Gialanella, of Yonkers, shortly after 1 a.m. in downtown New Rochelle on March 31, officials said. Following a 12-day battle in the hospital, he was pronounced dead this week.
After being struck, Izazaga was treated by paramedics and members of the New Rochelle Fire Department before being transported to a local hospital with head trauma. He was later pronounced dead.
Gialanella was arrested and charged with second-degree vehicular assault and driving while intoxicated. It is unclear if additional charges will be filed by police.
Following the incident, Izazaga’s family set up a GoFundMe fundraising campaign, which exceeded it’s $15,000 goal in less than five days, reaching nearly $20,000 in that span.
“It is with heavy hearts our family has lost an amazing young man today. After a tragedy that took place on 3/31/19 and fighting for 12 long days, God knows why he needed him, But he leaves behind so many great memories,” his aunt, Jennifer Flick, posted on the GoFundMe page.
“For you who knew Fernando, know what a kind-hearted young man he was. I please ask everyone to help our family during this tragic time with anything possible to go towards his funeral costs. His family is Very thankful of all the support we have received during these hard times and ask you to remember the amazing 27 years that Fernando lived and hold on to the great memories we all shared with him.”
