MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. Jane Abbate is a lifelong Mount Pleasant resident and said she feels it is her duty to serve the town she has called home for 46 years.
This is my community, these are my neighbors and my friends, Abbate said. Its important to bring the residents' voice to the table.
Abbate, currently a member of the Mount Pleasant Architectural Review Board, is running for a position on the Town Board in November's election. Abbate said she has always been an advocate for Mount Pleasant. As the founder of the civic group Mount Pleasant Today, Abbate was able to work with members of the town to improve areas such as installing pedestrian crosswalks and adding a café to the Hawthorne train station.
I believe in making the town a desirable place to be, Abbate said. If you want to establish an economy here with small businesses, you have to make it pleasing to people.
Abbate also realizes that in Mount Pleasant there are far bigger issues at hand than just aesthetics. Things such as flooding and managing a budget under the state tax cap worry the Valhalla resident. However, she said that if the town can fix issues on a small scale, it will eventually equate to a bigger resolution.
One goal for Abbate in the future is to make Mount Pleasant a more walk-friendly community.
I would love to see more sidewalks installed to make the area easier for pedestrians to commute places, Abbate. It could especially help around our schools and cut down on their budgets and transportation costs.
Abbate is currently a real estate professional with Keller Williams and holds a Bachelors Degree in Communications from the University of Hartford. She is a graduate of Westlake High School and is married with three children in the Mount Pleasant Central School District.
As a challenger in the town board election, Abbate will be running against current board members Mark Rubeo and Carl Fulgenzi. Town residents will have the opportunity to choose two out of three candidates.
