Hawthorne Students Review Local Eateries

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. – Many local restaurants in the Mount Pleasant area were put under the microscope recently by a group of food critics. These restaurant reviewers weren’t hard-hitting food writers, however, they were students from Hawthorne Elementary School.

“I’m all about the community here in Mount Pleasant,” said Hawthorne Elementary School teacher Anna Nazaruk. “And the students love giving their opinions so what better way to connect the two.”

The students from Nazaruk’s second grade class were each recently assigned to visit a local restaurant in Mount Pleasant and write a brief overall review of the food, service and display. The students were also asked to include a five-star rating system.  Each review will be hung on display in the restaurant for all future customers to see.

Kevin Giaccone reviewed the Thornwood Coach Diner, specifically their grilled cheese sandwich. He wrote, “My favorite sandwich to order is the grilled cheese with bacon on rye bread. The cheese is so gooey and the bacon is crispy every time!”

Madelyn Davis chose the Hawthorne Pizzeria on Elwood Avenue and recommended multiple food items.

“I love their pasta with chicken and broccoli,” Davis wrote. “A good side order is the garlic knots.”

For Isaiah Ortiz, who chose to review Brick Oven Pizza located in the Thornwood Town Center, his experience was more about the service.

“The place is just always set up really nice with their tables and everything,” Ortiz said. “And if you spill something the waiters and waitresses come over right away and clean it up for you.”

Nazaruk, who is in her first year teaching second grade in Hawthorne Elementary, said the restaurant review assignment is one she will continue to assign in the future.

“I think both the students and the parents really enjoyed it because it’s a chance for them to not only go out in to their community but also have their work displayed in public for others to see,” Nazaruk said.
