A former elementary school teacher in the area who resigned amid child pornography charges has admitted to the crime.

Steven Schwartz, 54, was indicted in May on seven counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child Dutchess County.

This week, Schwartz pleaded guilty to one count of possessing a sexual performance by a child and is expected to be sentenced to 10 years probation and may receive jail time when he is sentenced on Feb. 5. Schwartz had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Poughkeepsie resident had been a teacher in the Wappingers School District for several decades prior to his resignation in June. His arrest came following an investigation into an incident between Schwartz and a student at Fishkill Plains Elementary School, according to police.

Schwartz’s arrest came following an investigation by state police, the Dutchess County Child Advocacy Center and the school district determined that Schwartz was found in possession of child pornography on his personal devices, police said. He will remain released on $40,000 bond until his sentencing next year.
