Earlier report:
Police are warning residents to be on the alert for a wandering coyote who may be rabid in Hastings-on-Hudson.
The warning comes after three people were bitten and a dog was killed on Wednesday in the Village of Hastings, said Lt. David Dosin.
The events unfolded around 3:50 p.m. Wednesday when the department received a call from a resident who reported being involved in an auto accident with a coyote on Broadway near Burnside Drive, Dosin said.
Patrols were detailed along with the Greenburgh Animal Warden. It was determined the coyote suffered fatal wounds. The animal was transported to the Westchester County Health Department for testing.
At approximately 7:12 p.m. police received a call from a resident of Kent Avenue saying he was attacked around 6:30 p.m. by a coyote and was at St. John's Hospital for treatment for a leg injury, Dosin added.
Officers went to the man's home, but couldn't locate the animal.
Following the first attack, the department received several calls reporting a second coyote attack on a resident and a small dog around Overlook Road, Dosin said.
Patrols and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene and the victim was transported to St. John’s Hospital with hand and leg injuries.
The small dog suffered fatal injuries during the attack.
Officers from the Department of Environmental Conservation Police Department were notified and responded to assist with a search of the area. The entire area was searched without finding the animal, Dosin said.
The coyote was last seen running towards Hillside Woods.
During the search, officers were approached by a resident who reported earlier in the day he was walking his dog in Hillside Woods by Sugar Pond and was chased away by a coyote.
Because coyotes who attack may be rabid, any resident who has sighted a coyote should contact the police department immediately at 914-478-2344.
