The truck was traveling northbound on 9A in the left lane at 3:30 p.m. when it lost control and mounted the center guardrail and encroached into the left lane of southbound 9A, according to Mount Pleasant Police Chief Paul Oliva.
Two passenger vehicles were involved in the incident. One driver received minor injuries while Stevens, a White Plains resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, Oliva said.
The accident forced the closure of Route 9A for nearly 12 hours.
The Peekskill School District announced that its high school concert had been postponed due to Stevens' death.
"On behalf of the high school family, our deep sympathies go out to Mr. Stevens’ friends and family," Superintendent Dr. Larry Licopoli said. "The district will keep you apprised of the make-up date for the concert which will be dedicated to Mr. Stevens."
According to his LinkedIn page, Stevens had been a guidance counselor at Peekskill since January 2013. Before that, he was a counselor at Lakeland and was a teacher assistant in Greenburgh.
A graduate of the University of Rochester, Stevens obtained his Masters in school counseling from Mercy College.
Olivia asked anyone that witnessed the accident to contact Mount Pleasant Police at 914-769-1941.
