Former Hawthorne Fire Chief, Mellor Dies at 88

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. -- Robert G. Mellor, formerly of Hawthorne, died Feb. 8 at the age of 88. 

Retired from Con Edison after 40 years, Mellor was a former chief and commissioner of the Hawthorne Fire Department.

He was born July 12, 1923 in Yonkers. During World War II, Mellor served in the Navy as a pharmacist mate in the South Pacific. He married Evelyn Green and they had two children.

Mellor was Master of the Fern Brook Masonic Lodge in Yonkers and a 45-year volunteer at the Hawthorne Fire Department. He was also a member of the Hawthorne Reformed Church, where he served as deacon. Most recently of Venice, Fla., Mellor and his wife were enthusiastic travelers and had visited almost every country in the world before retiring to Florida.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn, his son Gary and his wife Sherry of Wayne, N.J., his daughter Laurie of Rotonda, Fla. and two grandchildren. 

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday at Hawthorne Funeral Home, where services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Interment will follow at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla.
