New Law Will Put A Student On Every School Board In NY
There will soon be a student on every school board in New York.A new law requiring all state boards of education to have at least one student member will take effect on July 1, 2025. The students will attend public meetings, but not executive sessions, and won't be allowed to vote. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the bill on Thursday, Sept. 5. It will also remove the current law requirement that a student member seat be authorized by referendum of the voters of the district. Bullet Found Inside Gym At School In Hudson Valley
Students and staff at an area school got an unwelcome surprise when a bullet was found in the bleachers at the end of their game. In Orange County, Minisink Valley Schools Superintendent Brian Monaghan issued an alert to the community advising that following a boys modified basketball game, a bullet was found in the stands. Some of the results from New York’s first all-mail school elections are trickling in as districts work to count the ballots. As of Wednesday, June 17, no school districts in Westchester County have reported that their budgets failed, while many of the incumbent school board members look likely to maintain their seats. White Plains Teachers, School District, Reach Agreement On Contract
The White Plains School District and the city’s Teachers’ Association have settled on an agreement on a three-year contract that will include a 1.5 percent annual salary increase. The new contract was agreed upon by both parties as of Friday, Feb. 8, and it was officially voted on an approved Monday night at its meeting on Feb. 11. An Iona College student has started a change.org petition imploring New Rochelle school officials to resign in the wake of several violent incidents involving high school students in the past two weeks.
