Idalia Strengthens To Hurricane, With 120 MPH Winds Expected: Latest Projected Path, Timing Idalia has strengthened to become the third hurricane of the 2023 Atlantic season with its projected path taking it up the East Coast. Idalia formed late Saturday afternoon, Aug. 26 as a tropical depression before being upgraded on Sunday, Aug. 27 to a tropical storm and to a Category 1 hurricane in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Aug. 29.
