A bacterial infection is appearing nationally with unusual and serious symptoms according to federal authorities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has just issued a Health Alert warning that the rare illness, caused by a strain of Neisseria meningitidis bacteria, has a higher fatality rate than normally seen with meningococcal infections. The first positive West Nile Virus case of the year was reported in Westchester. Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler said that the department was made aware of the first human case of the virus, which was confirmed in a 58-year-old resident.
