Revived Mamaroneck Bats Rock Hastings

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Mamaroneck baseball team recovered from a slow start Monday, scoring runs in bunches after trailing early to run away with a 16-5 victory over host Hastings.

Matt Mezansky and Matt Marino each had big run-scoring hits in the third and fourth innings as the Tigers exploded for 11 quick runs to open an 11-2 lead. Marino had two hits and drove in two runs and Gerry McMullin drove in three runs.

“Their pitcher (Dylan Healy) was throwing some off-speed stuff, so we just had to put the ball in play and that got us going,” Mezansky said. “We hit a lot of line drives after that. We made a few mistakes that we can’t make if we’re in big games.”

Despite giving Hastings an early 2-0 lead, Tigers’ starting pitcher Will Hofmann settled down until his teammates could get their offense in gear. The junior righty struck out seven and allowed four earned runs on seven hits over five innings to earn his first win of the season.

“I was looking down a little and not throwing to the target in the first couple of innings,” Hofmann said. “Once I got focused it was better and we hit the ball well. I think being down in Florida helps because you can get your arm ready in warmer climate.”

Marino, who drove in Mamaroneck’s fourth and fifth runs in the fourth inning, said the 4-2 Tigers are settling in after spending their spring break training and playing in Florida.

“We put in a lot of work getting ready for the season starting with workouts in December,” Marino said. “We have to do all the basics the right way to be successful.”
