Vitti led the Mamaroneck Tigers to the second round of the sectional playoffs when they defeated the Scarsdale Raiders 45-20. It was the first victory for Mamaroneck over Scarsdale since 2008, and the first sectional playoff victory for the program since the current state tournament format began in 1993.
The award is named in honor of former Union High School (N.J.) coach Lou Rettino, died in 1996 od stomach cancer. Rettino amassed a 216-56-6 record in 31 years as a New Jersey high school football coach, including ten state sectional titles.
As part of Vitti's award, he will receive a certificate of recognition signed by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, along with a $1,000 check, to be matched by Chase Bank, to be given to the Tigers football program. Vitti will also be acknowledged with a stadium announcement when the Giants play Indianapolis on Nov. 3 at MetLife Stadium and on the team's website.
Vitti has been part of the Tigers program since 2000, serving as an assistant until 2007, moving up to defensive coordinator and eventually being named head coach before the start of the 2010 season. He also played for the school from 1991 to 1992, earning all-league and all-section awards as a senior. On top of his duties as coach, he currently teaches science at Horrocks Middle School in the area.
