Rye Neck Kids Experience First Day In Kindergarten

RYE NECK, N.Y. – The doors of Daniel Warren Elementary School opened in Rye Neck at 11:45 a.m., Wednesday, and scores of smiling kindergartners raced out to their parents after their first day.

“It went great,” said interim Principal Jane Scheinman of the young students. “Nobody was crying, everybody seemed happy, the kids look like they’re enjoying school. I think we’re in good shape.”

One of the anxious parents was John Randolph, whose five-year-old son, Austin, attends the K-2 school. With the rain subsiding and the sun peeking out, Austin hugged his dad tightly, and excitedly said, “I love kindergarten.”

Randolph has thought about moving to Armonk because of lower taxes and more acreage than in Mamaroneck, but he is now not so sure after seeing his son’s reaction to his first day. He spoke highly of the faculty and staff at Daniel Warren.

“If he loves it here, which I think he will, then I’ve got a decision to make to be honest with you because they’ve been really good here for him,” said Randolph. “If he’s happy and doing well, got to stick with it. I’ll just have to suck it up and payer higher taxes.”

Austin’s teacher, Monique Santoro, has been teaching at the school since 1985. The 27-year veteran said the class is “off to a good start.”

“First day without their parents and I think it went well,” said Santoro, who added that she loves teaching. “I don’t think we had any criers.”
