MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Mamaroneck school officials warned parents on Wednesday that a Hommocks Middle School cafeteria worker has been diagnosed with Hepatitis A and is recovering.

According to a letter posted on the school district website by Superintendent Robert Shaps, the Westchester County Department of Health informed the Mamaroneck Union Free School District on Wednesday that the cafeteria worker, employed by Aramark Food Service,  had Hepatitis A.

"Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler, MD, has assured us that it is unlikely that anyone at the school would become ill as a result,'' Shaps wrote. "They have informed us that the individual has not been in school for the past two weeks and is no longer symptomatic."

The health and safety of our students and staff members is our highest priority, Shaps said.

"Our school nurses have been instructed to keep a watchful eye for any student or staff member who may exhibit symptoms," Shaps wrote.

Symptoms of Hepatitis A may include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, joint pain and jaundice -- a yellowing of the skin or eyes.

District spokeswoman Debbie Manetta said school officials have been in close communication with the health department and are following every recommendation.

Manetta said the school district will notify parents and post any updates on its website if there are any new developments.
