Larchmont Library Speaker To Discuss Path Of New Drugs To Market

LARCHMONT, N.Y. – The Larchmont Public Library is to offer a community presentation focused on why new drugs, many of them potentially life-saving, are not brought to market sooner, according to a statement from event organizers.

Harald Duell, a local man whose family over the past 20 years has experienced the healthcare systems of three countries, is to discuss the topic at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 13, according to the statement.

Duell’s aim is to address a number of issues, including why the cost of developing new drugs is so high and why it takes three phases of tests and reviews to get a new drug into the pharmacy.

The speaker plans to present specific case studies illustrating a drug’s “long journey” to enter the market and why the process often takes 10-20 years and millions of dollars.

A brief history of the Federal Drug Administration as well as the work of regulatory agencies in other countries are also likely topics of discussion, according to the statement.

Duell, who has lived in Larchmont for 16 years, is married and has two children. He has been interested in biotech and varying pricing models in health care for several decades and has covered a number of pharmaceutical companies as a former generalist stockbroker for European stocks.
