"This is day of new beginnings,'' Rye Police Commissioner Michael C. Corcoran Jr. said. "This is a very proud day for the City of Rye."

Corcoran said that during his eight weeks on the job as Rye's new commissioner, two police officers stood out as potential leaders: Jason Washco and Edward Balls.

"They're going to be great examples of what leadership is in the Rye Police Department,'' Corcoran said. "We're going to continue down the path of greatness."

Rye Mayor Joe Sack said that while it is not a requirement that Rye police officers reside within the city limits, the two newly-promoted officers happen to live in Rye. Sack called that a plus since the officers know the community well, and Balls has children attending Rye schools.

"It is a great day," Sack said.

Corcoran said Washco is going to make an excellent supervisor, calling him "a very progressive young man."

Washco also happens to lead the police department in vehicle and traffic tickets, the commissioner noted.

Balls, meanwhile, was likened to a greeter at Wal-Mart. "He's a very community-oriented guy (and) always a go-to guy," Corcoran said.

Balls was joined at Friday's ceremony by his wife, Vanessa, their two sons, and his parents, Bruce and Linda.

Washco was joined at the swearing-in ceremony by his wife, Jessica.
