Westchester Enjoys Fireworks At Rye Playland

RYE, N.Y. – Thousands gathered at Rye Playland this Wednesday to celebrate Independence Day with one of the largest public fireworks shows in Westchester County.

“I enjoy watching the fireworks with the music in the background,” said Iris Sanchez who brought her husband, three children and younger brother to Playland with her. “It’s a nice environment for the kids.”

Families started gathering first thing in the morning at the park. By evening all of the picnic areas were filled with people playing ball, barbecuing and hanging out. The lines for rides were anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour long and screams could be heard from the Dragon Coaster across the park.

“The kids like to go on the rides and then we like to see the fireworks here, rather than just watch them on TV,” said Lucila Ciman.

Ten-year-old Allan Noboa chimed in, “They’re colorful, when they do the big ones and the different shapes, it’s my favorite part.”

For many, the Fourth of July holiday allows for extra family time, that they normally would not get to have.

“My grandfather is 89-years-old and we wanted to bring him out and spend time with him and together,” said Sydney Collier, 17, of the Bronx. “Playland is very family-oriented and we like that.”

Numerous families came from New York City to enjoy Playland for the day.  Many of them said that Westchester overall had a calm, relaxing environment and felt that traffic was controlled better than other places.

“The park security really helps move things along,” said Jospeh Sanchez. “I mean, traffic is still traffic, but it’s much better than I’ve seen at other places.”

Parking at Playland for the fireworks display was free of charge for county residents and $10 for out-of-county residents.  The park charges $30 for rides and $20 for children under 48 inches.
