All community members are invited to hear Nazario speak at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 in McLain Auditorium at Mamaroneck High School, 1000 W. Boston Post Road.
“Through this text, we will be examining the current climate of immigration policies in our country, reflecting on misconceptions and stereotypes, and analyzing the narrative of immigration in America,” said 9th grade English teacher Waldina Pineda. She has worked along with other teachers in the English department to make the author's visit happen.
Nazario’s appearance is made possible through a grant from the Mamaroneck Schools Foundation.
“The presentation I give includes showing about 40-50 photographs of the journey. I center my talk around the power of determination--in my life, the migrants' lives, and talk about the narrative highs and lows of the book," Nazario said.
"I talk about my own three-month journey on top of freight trains through Mexico and how it changed my view of migrants. And I discuss the immigration issue--locally, nationally and internationally. Unlike many others on this topic, I think the approaches embraced by both the left and right and again being debated in Congress don't work, and I talk about alternative solutions.”
A special Meet & Greet with Hispanic community members will be held in Spanish with Nazario from 6 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14 in the lobby just outside McLain Auditorium. Nazario -- who will serve as this year’s keynote speaker at the National Council for Teachers of English Conference -- will make a presentation to 9th and 10th grade students the following morning and visit with students at lunchtime.
