MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection has received reports of metallic-tasting water from individual consumers in Mamaroneck village.

The DEP said it believes this is caused by the natural growth and biological degradation of certain algae in at least one of the reservoirs and is related to complaints received earlier last month.

The return of the metallic-tasting water is likely due to temporary operational changes DEP is making at some upstate reservoirs, DEP said.

The taste and odor issues caused by algae are not uncommon to water utilities nationwide. However in the New York City system, source water protection programs have significantly reduced the frequency of algae-related impacts on the water supply system over the last decade.

The DEP has done extensive testing and investigation of both Mamaroneck's source waters in upstate watersheds and in the city’s distribution system, and the water is safe to drink, DEP said.

The DEP said it is working to address this issue as quickly as possible and expects conditions to improve during the next week.

If you are experiencing metallic tasting water, call 311.
