Breaking News: 23-Year-Old Killed, 3 Injured In Head-On Crash In Hudson Valley

Mamaroneck, Rye Neck Schools Go Under Lockdown

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – All Mamaroneck and Rye Neck schools were under lockdown after a suspicious male tried to enter the Hommocks Pool entrance a little after 11:30 a.m. Thursday, according to notices both school districts sent to parents.

The individual left after a campus supervisor told him he could not remain on school grounds, the letter said. The supervisor said the man seemed to be holding a gun underneath his coat, according to the letter. When asked if he had a gun, the man confirmed that he did and said he worked in the security field.

After he was denied entry, the man said he would come back later and police were called. The Mamaroneck town police are investigating the matter.

“We’re thankful the door this individual tried to enter was locked, like all of our other doors except our main entrance,” said Debbie Manetta, spokesperson for the Mamaroneck School District. “The campus supervisor was proactive and vigilant enough to notice that he was carrying something under his coat.”

Mamaroneck district schools recently announced that all schools would have only one point of entry.

"The topic of safety is at a higher and greater level than ever before," Manetta said.

Mamaroneck schools have also changed their visitor policy to require all visitors to have a pre-arranged meeting with someone in the school, show identification and sign-in with a greeter at the main entrance.

Police have increased their presence at all Mamaroenck and Rye Neck schools through at least Friday. While police investigate the incident, Mamaroneck schools are cancelling all afternoon and evening activities at all of its schools.
