Arielle Joselson, 17, and Seri Roth, 17, co-founded "A Dollar Campaig" with hopes of raising a little money for pediatric cancer. Two years later, the organization has raised more than $10,000.
The non-profit organization, whose stated mission is to support research with the goal of finding a cure for pediatric cancer, has been very successful, providing Joselson and Roth with several interviews and television appearances in the past year, including appearing on Glenn Beck's Liberty Treehouse.
"All we ask our donors for is one dollar, so that everyone, especially young people, can be part of finding a cure," Joselson said. "In these hard economic times, people can't donate what they once could, but everyone can spare a dollar for pediatric cancer."
The organization, which is a branch of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, has held several fundraising events in Westchester.
Because the organization is not an official non-profit, the proceeds go through the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, which then donates to nearby hospitals and foundations, including the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center.
"We created this charity because we want to show other kids that no matter how young, if you have a passion for something you can do anything," Joselson said. "We have no overhead, and work out of our homes, so all proceeds go to supporting our mission."
Though Joselson and Roth are applying to colleges across the country, neither want to abandon the cause.
"Both of us want to create chapters at our colleges and keep it going," Joselson said. "We don't want it to be something we only did in high school. We want it to be a forever thing."
The two plan to hold a day of fundraising in the near future, involving local families participating via lemonade stands or garage sales to see who can raise the most money.
She said, "We both have a passion to help kids with cancer, so we thought what better way, than to take initiative, and create a charity of our own."
