Rebecca Eller, who never shies from a new challenge, is preparing for her first triathalon. Eller, head of childrens services at the Larchmont Public Library, powers that same drive to encourage children from infants to sixth-graders to develop a lifelong quest for knowledge.
Now a resident of White Plains, Eller grew up in New Rochelle and was captain of the swim team at the College of New Rochelle. She has been running for a while and has been biking with fiancé Gordon Teglaf. She decided this year to put it all together in a triathalon. Her goal is to do a Half Ironman competition by next fall. This fall, she will start by doing a triathalon with Teglaf and a friend, each doing one leg of the swimming-biking-running event. She and Teglaf even plan to train during their honeymoon in Antigua this month.
Eller harnesses that same energy at the Larchmont library, where she has worked since 2008. She also takes library programs into the local schools, meeting up this past year with some students she has worked with since they were babies in her program. It was neat to go into their world, Eller says as she describes the greetings she receives from the kids.
In this high-tech world, Eller helps children navigate their way through information on the Internet, separating good information from those postings without support or documentation. She believes libraries will always be important because librarians are not just the keepers of the books, they are also the interpreters and gatherers of information.
Eller loves the community support the library receives. That, combined with the great staff at the Larchmont Public Library, makes it the best job in the world.
