LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- The Oresman Gallery at the Larchmont Public Library will open the exhibit, "Pathways Through Nature," featuring art by Rye artists Silvia Gesing and Lorraine Mignone, on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

The exhibit will be on display through Monday, Jan. 30.

The exhibit of pastels and oils represent the more recent works of these two artists, according to a release from the Larchmont Public Library.  The scenic, original works of art were inspired by the natural world – its beauty, endless variety of subject matter and layers of color, the release said.

Viewers are invited into serene landscapes that provide a visual sense of the luminous effects that are created by atmospheric conditions and that will hopefully invoke a personal memory of a joyful or precious place to each viewer, according to the release.

Gesing is an oil and pastel artist who has resided in Rye since 1994, having moved there from Toronto, Canada. She is largely self-taught, although over the years she has taken many courses in watercolor, acrylics, oil and pastel.

For a number of years, she enjoyed the tutelage of the talented pastelist John B. Conroy. At present, she is working on developing her skills in oil painting under the guidance of Elizabeth Derderian at the Rye Arts Center.

Gesing is a member of the Art Society of Old Greenwich and has exhibited in many shows. Her works have won many prizes and can be found in private collections in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

“All my life I have enjoyed nature and the outdoors; therefore, it was a given that these should be the sources of my artistic inspiration and expression,” Gesing said. “I have tried to capture the interplay between light and shadow, color and the mood of a place rather than specific detail."

Mignone has been a student of traditional painting for more than 10 years. Her educational background includes instruction at Westchester Community College, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Salmagundi Club in New York City where she studied with artists Seth Forman, David Fox and Elizabeth Spencer.

Her abstract oils are a fairly new addition to her portfolio. She is self-taught in this genre, attaining her inspiration from artist Jane Wilson.

“My work has an emotional connection to nature," said Mignone. "I’m drawn to beautiful skyscapes, tranquil water and lush foliage. The patterns and colors that create the natural harmonies of each season are what I strive to capture in my work. For me, a painting is never really finished because each new day brings subtle change to the landscape."

The exhibit, which is free, is open during normal library hours. For exhibit hours and information about the Larchmont Public Library, call (914) 834-2281 or visit
