- Think about using the background to show the colors and mood of the season.
- Take the kids outside for photos. Natural light is usually best.
- If shooting during the day, bring kids out of direct sun and into the shade for better light on their faces.
- If at night, when trick-or-treating, find the best decorated houses and use them as a background.
- Try shooting at dusk for great light.
- Turn on your flash and pop a little fill-flash in the photo if the faces are coming out too dark.
- You should bring flashlights with you for safety trick-or-treating and consider your flashlight to light your photos. Your flashlight-lit portraits will probably look better than photos using your camera's flash, especially if you hold the flashlight off to the side of the camera.
- For a spooky effect while you're using the flashlights, hand them to your kids and have them hold them under their chins, pointing up towards their faces.
- For a more creative shot, change your perspective: get down low and shoot up towards your subjects.
- Use the lights from toys and decorations to light your photos. Get your kids close to the light source and turn off your camera's flash in this case.
